Motorway Notes
The French motorway system is part pay and part free. It will cost you approximately €35 to travel from Calais to Souillac (17 miles from the house), all of the journey on motorways.
French route directions tend to give the name of the major town at the end of the motorway. Therefore a general awareness of French geography and its motorway system is a help.
Calais to the Dordogne
From Calais take A26 direction PARIS.
Continue until A1 intersection. Take A1 direction PARIS.
Shortly after Charles de Gaulle Airport, north of Paris, take A3 direction BORDEAUX.
Take a series of motorways, A3/A86/A6, around the east of Paris. Simply follow direction BORDEAUX and NANTES.
You emerge to the south of Paris on the A10.
Continue on A10 following direction BORDEAUX and ORLEANS.
At Orleans take A71 direction ORLEANS, VIERZON, BOURGES, LIMOGES, CLERMONT FERRAND.
At Vierzon(50 miles from Orleans) take A20 direction TOULOUSE, CHATEAUROUX, LIMOGES.
Leave A20 at exit 55 direction SOUILLAC. Travel 1½ miles to Souillac on D804 (D703 on older maps).
Turn left at roundabout on N20 direction TOULOUSE, CAHORS, SARLAT.
Travel for about ½ mile on N20(main street of Soulliac) to a traffic light. Turn right on to D804 direction CARLUX, SARLAT. Road numbering reverts to D703 at the outskirts of Souillac.
(You now follow D703 to within ½ mile of the house following the directions given below. The general direction is LA ROQUE GAGEAC and sometimes BERGERAC.)
Travel 9 miles from the Souillac traffic light to CALVIAC-EN-PERIGORD. Calviac is a straggling village but when you pass the end-of-village sign(after about 2 miles) prepare to turn left after a right hand bend, direction AILLAC, CARSAC. This is still D703.
Pass through the cross-road at Rouffillac following direction SARLAT.
After 2 miles you come to Carsac. Continue through the following junction taking the D703, direction LA ROQUE GAGEAC, VITRAC.
After 1 mile you come to a parking area where you can stop and view the fabulous Montfort Castle on a rocky bluff above the river.
Continue on D703. 1 mile after Montfort village take left fork for VITRAC PORT not right for Vitrac Bourg. At this point golfers will notice the course on the left hand side!
You arrive at a T-junction in Vitrac Port. Take the following directions to the house.
The Dordogne to Calais
To return to Calais follow the above route following the directions to LILLE as you drive the eastern route around Paris.
